New York Mayor Zohar Mamdani has finally received federal security clearance from the US government.
After months of waiting, he has been granted clearance and will now be able to participate in secret briefings by federal agencies on classified information related to New York City security and potential emergencies.Mamdani confirmed that he had received security clearance during a separate press conference held in Brooklyn on Wednesday.
“I now have security clearance,” he told reporters.It is not yet clear when exactly US President Donald Trump granted the clearance, according to the American online outlet Axios. Mamdani spokesman Sam Raskin said only that the clearance was approved sometime this week.
Mamdani met with Trump just days before receiving the clearance, a meeting that was seen as a positive development in the relationship between the two leaders.
But no evidence has been made public that the meeting with Trump played any role in the decision to grant Mamdani clearance.
Mamdani’s security clearance process was initiated by the Department of Homeland Security. The FBI conducts the background checks required for clearance.
