The Dodhara Chandani Suspension Bridge in Kanchanpur has collapsed in the middle. The suspension bridge built on the Mahakali River has collapsed in the middle.
The suspension bridge connecting Bhimdatta Municipality (13, Pipraiya) to Dodharachandani (4, Dodhara) in the district has broken in the middle and fallen into the river. Locals have said that the bridge broke after a pillar washed away in the Mahakali River. Local Santuram Luhar said that the bridge broke. He said that the bridge may have broken in the middle due to lack of timely maintenance, adding, “The bridge, which was built 25 years ago, may have broken because it was not maintained regularly.”
The bridge, which was built two and a half decades ago, has been closed to traffic after a strange collapse in the middle. The over 1,000-meter-long suspension bridge, built in 2058 BS, is known as the second longest bridge in Asia.
The bridge was built with the aim of directly connecting Dodhara Chandani, known as Nepal across the Mahakali River, from the district headquarters of Mahendranagar to the country’s geography.
Kanchanpur Chief District Officer Madan Koirala said that the broken bridge will be repaired soon. He said that he has sent photos and videos of the broken bridge to the Suspension Bridge Repair Branch and that a technician will come and repair it by today or tomorrow.
Traffic has also been disrupted after the bridge collapsed in the middle of the river. As a four-lane bridge has been constructed on the Mahakali River near the bridge, there is no major disruption to the movement of citizens.
